Before our global tour with Maya Jane Coles closes on its enormous finalé in Madrid, Boiler Room & Ballantine's are coming together to present the True Music Forum: a day of panels to discuss the music industry's uncertain future.

The first of its kind in our history, it's an attempt to gather some of the world's most vital music activists to interrogate the fundamental challenges facing the industry, while looking to the new structures being built in their midst. Three panel talks will be broadcast across the day — scroll down to watch back.

What's the Future of European Night Life?

Night club closure, re-openings and expansions are happening rapidly and haphazardly across Europe. These are the shifts that catalysed "Save Our Culture": the artist-led movement that gained increasing momentum towards the end of 2016. We brought together those at the forefront of European nightlife to dissect some of the scene's most pressing concerns & opportunities. On the panel:

  • Mirk Milan — Amsterdam Night Mayor
  • DJ Fra — Nitsa Resident and lead Primavera Curator
  • Georgia Taglietti — Head of Communications at Sonar Festival
  • Jenya Sobol — Co-Founder, Arma17 Moscow
  • Mariana Duarte Silva — Co-Founder of Village Underground Lisbon

A Lens on Spain's Underground

In Spain, music has long been a symbol for hedonism as much as activism. From Barcelona to Madrid to Ibiza, we take a long view on the history of Spanish rave: its shifting origins; its ever-changing DNA; and its interconnectivity with the rest of Spain's artistic landscape.

Our panel comprised some of the most decisive innovators in the Spanish underground:

  • Paco Osuna  one of the country's most renowned and forward-thinking exports
  • DJ Fra — lead curator at Primavera and resident at Barcelona's famous Nitsa
  • Olivia Moreno — the force behind some of Spain's most important parties in Blank & Giradiscos
  • Alicia Alvarez — Professor of Aesthetic & Mass Media at Ramon Llull University
  • Noelia Rodriguez — CEO of Delicalisten and promoter at Dnit (host)

Skepta won the Mercury Prize. MIA arrived in London to celebrate the city's emergent DIY radio stations. More artists than ever shook off major label record deals in order to focus on writing their own rulebook.

Joining the discussion on the rise & relevance of independence in the industry was:

  • Kieran Yates — Founder of British Values; journalist with The Guardian, Dazed, i-D
  • K15 — DJ, Radio Host and Producer (Eglo, WotNot Music, Wild Oats)
  • Aly Gillani — First Word Records label boss; Bandcamp's label liason
  • Lily Mercer — DJ & presenter on Rinse RM / Beats1; founder of Viper Magazine
